USMLE Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills)

The USMLE Step 2 CS is 1-day exam that tests a student's ability to communicate with patients in a clinical setting. It is designed to recreate a physician's typical day at a clinic, doctor's office or hospital. The simulated patient-based exam must be taken in the United States at one of five Clinical Skills Evaluation Centers in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia or Houston. Historically, US students have taken the Step 2 CS late in their senior year, prior to graduation. However, some competitive programs require students to record a passing score for both the USMLE CS Step 2 and CK Step 2 prior to submitting his or her application for residency.

Topics covered on the USMLE Step 2 CS are based on common outpatient or Emergency Room visits as encountered in the fields of internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology. US medical students (and doctors who have graduated from foreign medical schools) are required to:

  • Demonstrate a Professional and Empathetic Manner
  • Conduct a Patient History and Physical Examination
  • Determine a Diagnosis and Write a Patient Note
  • Explain the Diagnosis and Prescribed Treatment

USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills

Working with simulated patients (actors), examinees are expected to investigate important patient complaints, as well as obtain a thorough assessment of their past medical history, medications, allergies, social history including drug use, alcohol consumption, use of tobacco products, sexual practices, and family medical history.

The PASS Program South USMLE Step 2 CS course study is structured to give students hands-on experience with immediate feedback. Each student is guaranteed a minimum of two weekly one-on-one sessions with a USMLE clinical skills instructor and one follow-up session with the program's director and founder, Dr. Hans Wolf. Our goal is for you to do and say all the right things as a practicing physician.
